      Interview

First we make an appointment with the inquirer for an interview so they may ask questions and express any concerns they may have. Then we explain the process and how it works to them.

Period of Evangelization and the Precatechumenate

This is a time of no fixed duration or structure. It is a time for inquiry and introduction to gospel values, and an opportunity for the beginnings of faith. The adults will meet once a week during this period.

Rite of Acceptance into the Order of Catechumens

This is the liturgical rite we celebrate three times a year marking the beginning of the catechumenate. During this rite the catechumens express, and the Church accepts, their intentions to respond to God's call to follow the way of Christ. We celebrate The Rite of Welcome for all candidates who have been baptized as Catholics or who are coming from another faith at a separate liturgy.

      Period of the Catechumenate

During the Period of the Catechumenate, together with the community, the catechumens and candidates celebrate the Liturgy of the Word at the 10:00 A.M. Mass each Sunday. After the Homily, they and their catechists continue to study and ponder the scriptures and teachings of the Church. Through prayer, learning, and coming to know other Catholic Christians, the catechumens and candidates discover the love and power of God in their lives and in the Church. For adults this period will last for one full Liturgical year.

Rite of Election or Enrollment of Names

At this Liturgical rite, which is celebrated on The First Sunday of Lent, the bishop formally acknowledges the readiness of the catechumens, declares in the presence of the community the Church's approval of the candidates, and calls them to the sacraments of initiation. The catechumens respond by expressing their desire for these sacraments. From this time, until they are baptized, they are called The Elect. The Rite of Calling the Candidates To Continuing Conversion celebrates God's call to the baptized candidates.

      Period of Purification and Enlightenment

This time of intense preparation for initiation usually coincides with Lent. During this period the Elect, together with the parish community, focus on conversion, scrutinize their lives in light of the gospel, and celebrate the presentations of the Creed and the Lord's Prayer. The Scrutinies are celebrated on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Sundays of Lent. These are for the catechumens only. The candidates celebrate the 2nd Sunday of Lent with The Penitential Rite.

Celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation

The Elect become full members of the Body of Christ, the Church, through the celebration of the sacraments of baptism, confirmation, and Holy Eucharist at the Easter Vigil. From this time until the end of the Period of Mystagogy they are known as Neophytes which means "new sprouts". The already baptized candidates receive the sacraments of confirmation, and Holy Eucharist usually on the second Sunday after Easter.

      Period of Mystagogy

During the fifty-day season of Easter, neophytes ponder the experience and meaning of the sacraments and participate with the faithful in the Eucharistic life of the Church and its mission for justice and peace. Formation and teaching continue for one year to help the neophytes become incorporated into the full life of the Christian community. We usually have a gathering of the adults once a month where speakers are invited to come and talk on different ministries and share their faith stories. It is a time to go into more catechesis on the mysteries of the Catholic faith that could not be explored during the Catechumenate.
